A Fenton man was arrested on Monday morning after police say he stabbed himself multiple times when asked to exit a stolen vehicle.

Police say the 62-year-old was sitting in the parked vehicle in a Meijer parking lot on Coolidge when officers responded on a report of a stolen car. When officers asked him to get out, the man reportedly refused.

It was at that time, police say, the man started stabbing himself in the leg with a knife. According to police, officers then took action by breaking a window, knocking the knife away and beginning to tend to the man's injuries.

"Initially the officers thought the subject was just pounding on his steering wheel with his fist. When they realized he was stabbing himself they immediately closed in and disarmed him.  Despite the risks to themselves, they knew they had to act quickly or the subject would likely kill himself,” said Chief Corrigan O’Donohue in a statement.

The vehicle, officers say, was stolen from Berkley and had multiple items inside that were reportedly taken in other area auto thefts.

The suspect remains hospitalized and is facing a number of charges including fleeing and eluding, home invasion and possession of stolen property.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call police.
