In honor of Veterans Day, a local nonprofit reached out to lend a helping hand to more than 100 homeless veterans who are housed at Southwest Solutions Piquette Square.

Dr. Anthony Weintert, a local foot and ankle surgeon, founded Shoe Pantry Plus to give back to the community.

He says he wanted to do something to help our veterans who've sacrificed so much to serve our country.

With the help of donors, Dr. Weinert's nonprofit organization donated new shoes and socks to each veteran at Piquette Square, which is a 150-unit apartment project which offers support services including job training, computer labs and counseling.

Vietnam veteran Robert Voland says nobody had ever given him brand new shoes before.

"It makes me feel like people care out there .. and they do," says Voland.

So far, through his non-profit, Dr. Weinert has distributed 5,000 pairs of new shoes to kids and veterans in Detroit.
