We drive through intersections everyday, but some are more dangerous the others.

The Michigan Auto Law Firm worked with Michigan State Police to compile the list of the most dangerous based on the number of crashes last year.

All but one in the top 20 are in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

Brandon Hewitt is an attorney with Michigan Auto Law Firm.

"A big part of it is obviously traffic," he explained. "One of the fateful things about Detroit is that we are increasing in population but with that obviously, we have more cars and obviously more drivers out on the road."

Here are the Top 5:

1) Pontiac Trail and M-5 in Commerce Township

2) 12 Mile Road and Telegraph Road in Southfield

3) 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Warren

4) 18 1/2 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights

5) I-75 and Big Beaver in Troy

The study cited speed and design as common factors.

"Very old designed, sometimes poorly designed intersections," Hewitt said. "Anytime you are at 45 or 55 MPH, it will really affect your ability to stop."

The Top 5 intersections all had something else in common, they were surrounded by retailers and commercial space.

"So you are going to have a lot of entry and exiting traffic. Whether it's somebody trying to make a left hand turn into a gas station for example. Here at 12 Mile and Telegraph we have a Meijer."

Hewitt said slowing down is a good ideas for drivers.

"Don't be in a rush to get any where. I always say, don't be the first one to enter an intersection. When see the light turn green just wait a second."
