First responders are heading to Lansing today to protest a proposed bill that would reform retiree benefits.
This potential bill is getting a lot of push back from our police officers and firefighters.
The legislation is set to reform health care and pension benefits, also known as "other post-employment benefits." It impacts current and future retirees.
Back in January, Governor Snyder created a task force to address the unfunded pension and healthcare liabilities of some local governments.
That group put together a recommendation to protect retiree healthcare and pensions.
The Police Officers Association of Michigan says the proposed bill does not include their recommendation.
The bills, critics say, would create a state committee, removing local government control and the right for collective bargaining.
The governor's office calls this a complex issue that needs immediate attention.
The legislation is expected to be introduced sometime this week.
