Michigan is bracing for its first big snowfall and blast of arctic air!

A strong cold front will sweep through southeast Michigan today and usher in the coldest air of the season along with the first big snowfall across parts of Michigan. The frigid air crossing the warmer waters of the Great Lakes is already producing bands of heavy lake-effect snow across the snowbelts of Michigan. The most significant snow will fall over a large part of the Upper Peninsula and part of northwest Lower Michigan. Areas near Lake Superior could see a foot or more of snow by Friday morning.

There will also be spots of lake-effect snow developing off of Lake Michigan on the west side of the state near US-31 . Watch for a few bursts of snow across Metro Detroit this afternoon and evening.  These quick bursts of snow may make roads a bit slick at times.

Winter temperatures will follow the strong front later today and tonight. Temperatures will plummet behind the cold front falling from the 40s this afternoon into the 20s and 30s by the evening across southeast Michigan. A gusty west-northwest wind will send wind chills crashing into the single digits to low teens as you head out the door to work or school Friday morning. Afternoon highs will only climb to near freezing to finish the week.

If you're looking for a quick warm-up, you won't find it this weekend. This big chill remains in place with high temperatures only in the 30s again on Saturday.
