DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Democrats take center stage, but Michigan Republicans are already speaking out ahead of the debate.

Laura Cox, Michigan Republican's chair, says Detroit is booming. The state's economy is booming and she says it's Republicans, not Democrats behind it. And she, along with many Republicans believe policies heard tonight will hurt that boom.

"I expect to see a little bit more moving to the left," Cox said. "More socialist policies."

Cox provided a pre-emptive rebuke of what she expects to hear from the candidates trying to get the Democratic nomination for president during night one of CNN's Democratic debates.

"The candidates have really kind of boxed themselves in and it’s going to be a clear choice between socialism and capitalism," she said. "And they are going to talk about free healthcare for all."

Voters in Detroit, and across the country, will be listening intently to how the 10 candidates will differentiate themselves.

"Climate change - very very very important," one Detroit voter said. "We need to save our plan."

President Trump's re-election campaign is taking a full ad in Detroit newspapers today to counter and the state's GOP is ready to strike a contrast.

"They’re going to talk about the green new deal and that’s a job killing," Cox said. "That will kill Michigan’s economy. When we see the clear differences - that people will go to the polls and reelect our president."
