Michigan State Police investigating officer-involved shooting overnight

WALLOON LAKE, Mich. (WXYZ) — Michigan State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday overnight.

On Oct. 26 around 12:33 a.m., a Charlevoix County deputy and a Boyne City officer were dispatched to find a suicidal subject.

The officers located the person around 2:20 a.m. in the area of US 131 and Springvale in Walloon Lake. They made contact with the subject and a struggle ensued shortly after, according to MSP. The subject was able to retrieve a firearm and confronted the officers. That's when the officers fired at the subject, MSP stated in a release.

After the subject was hit, the officers administered first aid and called for medical assistance.

According to MSP, the subject died, and the officers were not injured during the incident.

The Michigan State Police Grayling Forensic Lab and Aviation Unit were called to help with the ongoing investigation.

The subject’s identity is not being released at this time, police say.
