(WXYZ) — Michigan State Police are warning drivers - drive high and we will be able to bust you.
Last year Michigan State Police say 247 people died in drug related crashes.
On Tuesday MSP launched a pilot program in every county in the state. There are now troopers and local police trained to be “drug recognition experts.”
They will have the ability to force you to do an oral swab testing for drugs. If you don’t you will get a citation.
Police can’t just randomly drug test drivers. That is unconstitutional in Michigan.
They say the first thing they will do is look for someone who appears to be driving impaired.
“It is the actual impairment that will get you in trouble. When you combine the impairment with actually having the narcotics in your system, that is what gets you arrested for driving under the influence,” said Lt. Michael Shaw of the Michigan State Police.
State leaders are going to take a look at how this program works over the next year, then decide whether it should be permanent.
