(WXYZ) — A Michigan State Police trooper was struck after a driver fled the scene during a traffic stop.

On July 1, at approximately 8:35 p.m., troopers made a traffic stop at EB I-94 near 9 Mile Road for a license plate which expired in 2018 and failure for the driver to wear a seatbelt.

During his contact on the passenger side of the vehicle, MSP said the trooper saw open intoxicants inside the front seat area. The driver gave his license but the passenger gave a fake ID. As the investigation continued, MSP says the passenger ran from the car.

MSP says the passenger ran in front of the suspect car to cross the freeway into lanes of traffic. The trooper ran after the passenger and as he was in front of the suspect vehicle, MSP says the driver began to pull forward.

The trooper avoided being run over but was struck by the driver's side mirror, MSP says. Troopers started to pursue the vehicle, but it was quickly ended as police had the driver's license of the driver.

MSP says personnel went to the home of the driver and observed him running on foot through the backyard. A K-9 track was started and was unsuccessful.

Police say a warrant request will be submitted as the investigation continues.
