HOUGHTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — Michigan Tech became the second university in the state to suspend in-person classes amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

The university announced Wednesday afternoon that classes would continue virtually through at least April 17.

According to President Rick Koubek, students may return to campus or stay at their permanent place of residence.

"We urge all students to make the choice that is best for their own personal situation. However, high-risk populations are encouraged not to return to campus," he said in a letter.

Earlier Wednesday, Michigan State University said it would suspend face-to-face instruction through at least April 20.

The announcements came one day after the first coronavirus cases were confirmed in Michigan; one each in Oakland and Wayne counties.

Michigan Tech also has restricted university-wide travel to China, South Korea, Italy and Iran.
