(WXYZ) — Michigan is changing its laws when it comes to people who abuse or kill animals.

Two new laws are set to take effect this month that will increase penalties for the crimes.

Under the new laws, maximum sentencing for killing or torturing an animal would more than double from four to 10 years behind bars.

Someone who hurts an animal to cause emotional distress to another person can also face up to 10 years in prison.
