DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit Public Schools Community District is making a big change to how security is handled in its schools.

The school board has approved a plan to hire more security guards. There will be 91 full-time guards for 39 schools for the upcoming school year.

The guards will receive $3 more an hour than current guards and will be given benefits, according to DPSCD.

Principals in the schools will be in charge of hiring and managing the guards, while the Detroit Police Department will train the workers.

The guards will not be authorized to carry weapons or make arrests.
