(WXYZ) — Dozens of dogs are preparing to start the new year off in a new Michigan home.

The Michigan Humane Society says it has received more than 50 dogs from Louisiana this week from at-risk shelters.

Over the next few days, the 53 dogs will receive a health check and any treatment required, according to the Humane Society. To add, experts say pets could help their new owners stick to their New Year's resolutions.

"They are coming shelters that are in Louisiana that are overcrowded," said Doug Plant, Chief Operating Officer at the Michigan Humane Society.

No space in New Orleans shelters for man's best friend, ushered 53 furry pets to Michigan, flying into Ypsilanti's Willow Run Airport Thursday and preparing to be adopted.

"It's great that the demand here in Michigan is so big, so consistent. So we're able to adopt these animals out pretty quickly," said Plant.

Michigan Humane's Doug Plant says finding these pets a forever home is made possible by a partnership among three organizations.

One unintended consequence – experts say pets can help their humans stick to new years resolutions.

"They get us out moving," said Temma Martin, with Best Friends Animal Society. "We can go out walk with our pet. Run, if we're runners. Take them running. Even cats enjoy going out in a harness or even in a stroller."

And for many, the pandemic led to heavy isolation. Your pet can help you be social.

"They're natural icebreakers and a great way to meet like-minded people," said Martin. "You can play Frisbee, play catch. Just get out there and stay safe socially distanced and enjoy some outdoor time and talk to some other people as well."

The animals will be available for adoption starting next week. You can go to michiganhuman.org to find out how to adopt a new furry friend.
