A woman charged in the alleged drunk-driving crash that killed her 3-year-old son was arraigned in 34th District Court on Sunday.

The judge set 27-year-old Charlessia Pelt's bond at $1 million.

Pelt is charged with operating while intoxicated and causing the death of her son, 3-year-old Michael Jones. She is also charged with recklessly driving a vehicle, second-degree child abuse, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with passengers under 16 years of age.

Pelt was allegedly operating her car while intoxicated before the deadly crash that killed her 3-year-old son.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, the woman was driving eastbound on East Seven Mile Road in the wrong direction when she ran a red light and hit a car that was going north on Hayes.

A witness, Desmond Lemon, said he saw the 3-year-old fly out of the van while still in his car seat.

"It was pure chaos, the worst thing you would ever see," he said.

Lemon said the mother was there, devastated about her son. Her 3-month-old daughter was also in the van but was expected to be okay.

The mother's family said she had been getting help for some mental concerns and was taking medication for it.
