DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Motown Museum has received a $1.5 million grant from rhe W.K. Kellogg Foundation to support the development of educational programs that will be included in the facilities upcoming renovation and expansion.

The grant was announced by the CEO and chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of Motown Museum Monday.

“The W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Motown Museum share a similar vision for the future: a world that gives young people every opportunity to flourish as thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs,” said Robin Terry in a news release. “In the beginning, Motown provided opportunities for artists and musicians to realize their full creative potential. We are proud to continue serving the community in this same spirit. This critical grant funding allows us to build on the success of our existing programs and elevate our program offerings for talented, aspiring youth and adults."

The programs will join current education programs Motown Mic: The Spoken Word poetry contest, SPARK and IGNITE summer camps and the Amplify singing competition. Officials say the gift will help broaden the scale of existing programs.

“The Kellogg Foundation is dedicated to creating brilliant futures for children,” said W.K. Kellogg Foundation President and CEO La June Montgomery Tabron in a news release. “All of us who grew up in Detroit know Motown’s music, but the story of innovation and enterprise is a source of inspiration for young people as well. This investment is three-fold – it’s supporting the revitalization of a historic neighborhood, elevating resident voice and providing entrepreneurial and career development. Through these programs, more young Detroiters will be inspired by Motown’s story of creativity and begin to build in that spirit.”

The Motown Museum announced an expansion in 2016 that would grow the facility to a 50,000 square foot space.
