A federal grant from the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) will go toward completing major repairs to Mound Road.

The $98 million grant, presented through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant project, will help fund the $185 million Mound Road Industrial Corridor Project, which will be used to reconstruct the often-traveled, eight-lane thoroughfare.

Now, Congress has 60 days to review the list of projects recommended for funding nationwide, which includes Mound Road. And if approved, reconstruction will will start in 20 months.

According to a release from Macomb County, upon completion, the reconstruction project will not only reconstruct Mound Road, but also enhance the entire transportation corridor from I-696 in Warren to M-59 in Sterling Heights.

The INFRA grant application was submitted in the fall of 2017, and the awarding of the grant was announced Tuesday.

U.S. Congressman Paul Mitchell commented on the grant award saying that the Mound Road corridor is "extremely important to southeast Michigan."

“Since I came to Congress, I’ve been meeting with the White House, Department of Transportation – including Secretary Chao, and other members of Congress about Mound Road and the state of roads in Michigan,” Mitchell said. “This grant goes towards desperately needed repairs, which will improve the lives of my constituents, and anyone who drives on Mound Road."

The remaining cost for Mound Road repairs not coming from the federal grant will be covered by Macomb County, the City of Sterling Heights and the City of Warren, a release states.
