Run, hide, fight! The Department of Homeland Security hopes that you would remember that phrase, and respond in that order, in the case of an active shooter situation.

The Michigan State Police are re-iterating that today in light of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history in Las Vegas Sunday night. More than 58 people were killed and 200 injured during a massive shooting at a Route 91 Harvest Festival.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Run if you can.
  2. Hide if you’re stuck, which is often referred to as “shelter in place.”
  3. And fight if you’re confronted by the shooter --  (use improvised weapons)
