MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Two Mt. Clemens parents were arraigned Monday on charges of second degree murder in the fentanyl death of their 18-month-old baby, according to Macomb County prosecutors.
This afternoon, a Warren District Court judge denied bail for both 28-year-old Antonio Floyd and 27-year-old Shantanice Barksdale.
On Christmas Day morning, Antonio Floyd and his children’s mother, Shantanice Barksdale, were at their Clinton Township home, with three children. They took their children to their grandmother’s home in Warren that afternoon. A short time later, 18-month-old Ava Floyd was discovered not breathing.
The 18-month-old was taken to St. John Macomb Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m., officials say. No signs of trauma or abuse were observed by the hospital staff.
According to the the Medical Examiner’s office, the baby had an "extraordinary level of the narcotic fentanyl in her system at the time of death."
On Jan. 10, 2019, police executed search warrants on the grandmother’s home in Warren, as well as the parents’ home in Clinton Township. The police found evidence of manufacturing and distributing narcotics inside Floyd and Barksdale’s home.
Floyd and Barksdale have been charged with second degree murder, deliver/manufacturing of controlled substance, manslaughter, second-degree child abuse and felony firearm, prosecutors say.
Floyd, a convicted felon is also being charged with additional counts of felon in possession of a weapon and felony firearm.
