SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Two Syracuse football players were stabbed several times in an altercation at the university's south campus, and a former teammate has been charged in the assault.

Police said redshirt junior defensive backs Corey Winfield and Chauncey Scissum, both 21, were injured in the attack at about 6 p.m. Saturday and hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Naesean Howard, 20, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon and was being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center. Authorities believe the weapon used was a pocket knife.

Howard, a former Orange defensive back who grew up in Syracuse, left the program in September 2014 before re-enrolling this year with the hope of rejoining the team. He has never played in a game for the Orange.
