Sleep is a healthy, necessary function for people, especially growing boys like 7-year-old Wyatt Shaw. But earlier this month, Shaw just couldn't wake up.

According to a report by WDRB-TV, the Kentucky boy slept for 11 straight days, despite efforts by his mother to wake him up. His extended sleep has doctors perplexed as to why Wyatt slept for so long.

After falling asleep on Oct. 1, Wyatt did not wake up until Oct. 12.

Wyatt's mother Amy Shaw told WDRB that doctors performed a series of tests with no clear results.

"They said, 'We'll probably never know, but we're just going to treat him now with rehab to get him better,'" Shaw told WDRB.

After 11 days, Wyatt was given medicine usually administered to patients having a seizure. After the medicine brought Wyatt out of his deep sleep, he has struggled to walk and talk.

Although his condition has improved, he remains in a Kentucky hospital.
