"Let the shopping begin in District 5," said Detroit City Councilmember Mary Sheffield.

City officials held a news conference Thursday morning to announce a new mixed-use development coming to the Lafayette community including a Meijer-owned fresh grocery market.

Located on East Jefferson Avenue, the market is expected to be around 42,000 square feet and bring 70 full-time jobs.

The development will also be home to 213 apartment units with 20 percent marketed as affordable housing.

Parking won't be a problem, according to officials. The plan is to have more than 200 spots available for apartment residents and 120 available for shoppers.

"We think this is an outstanding proposal," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

The new development is reportedly slated to be completed in 2019.
