EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A new firearm ordinance in Eastpointe is getting backlash by some gun owners who say it's illegal and violates their constitutional rights.

Eastpointe issued the new firearm ordinance after an "inordinate" amount of firearms were stolen from unlocked vehicles.

"There is no reason to store a firearm in a vehicle that is not secured, especially overnight," Eastpointe public safety officials said.

According to the new ordinance, the storage of a firearm in an unlocked motor vehicle is now prohibited.

Violation of the ordinance is punishable by a fine up to $500 and up to 90 days in jail.
