(WXYZ) — The next few days in Michigan are expected to be above 90 degrees, but a new report found that the average number of days above 90 degrees in Michigan could quadruple by 2050.
The report from the Union of Concerned Scientists and analysis titled, "Killer Heat in the United States: Climate Choices and the Future of Dangerously Hot Days," says that nearly everywhere, people will experience more days of dangerous heat without action to reduce heat-trapping emissions.
According to the report, there have been eight days a year on average with ah eat index above 90 degrees, but it would increase to 34 days per year by mid-centruy and 62 by the end of the century.
The report also said that there has been just one day on average with a heat index above 00 degrees, but that would increase to 11 days by midcentury and 28 days by the end of the century.
Benton harbor, Kalamazoo and Monroe would experience the highest frequency of the days, the report said, and by the end of the century, around 8.7 million people are estimated to be exposed to a heat index above 100 degrees.
