As the summer months stretch, you may be looking at bored kids inside your home — Oakland County is offering up a distraction with its 2018 Camp OakVentures.

The new program sends kids into the great outdoors for five days with a chance to hike, swim, try archery, climb a rock wall, soar on a zip line, run through obstacle courses and more.

“What we’re hoping for is that we can expose these kids to at least one new hobby, or activity,” said Kelley Marcaccio, the recreation program supervisor. “They get to go on all these fun things and get these unique experiences.”

Camp OakVentures is a twist on the traveling sports camp that Oakland County Parks and Recreation ran nearly a decade ago — the difference is that the new program has an emphasis on a range of activities beyond sports for ages 6-12.

What’s nice for parents is that they sign-up through their local municipal park and drop the kids off daily at one park, but the program buses the kids to various parks throughout the week, giving them a chance to visit everything from water parks to an indoor StarLab for the budding astronomers.

Camps are offered throughout the summer months and each week can be signed up individually — the cost is $140 per camper/week. The registration includes a t-shirt, all park entries and tickets. The Camp OakVentures runs until August 17.
