(WXYZ) — An Oakland County woman is suing Campbell Soup Company and Kroger after she says a can of soup contaminated with clostridium botulinum bacteria (botulism) exploded in her face, causing "severe injuries and permanent physical impairments."
Debra Thompson brought the lawsuit against the New Jersey-based canned soup corporation and Ohio-based grocery company through her attorney Craig S. Romanzi.
According to the lawsuit, Thompson purchased a can of Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken & Dumplings soup from a Kroger store in Commerce Township on or about March 23, 2017.
Thompson was injured in 2017 when she opened the can of soup in her home and it exploded in her face, causing her to "violently jerk her head and neck backwards in a combination of shock and fear."
The lawsuit also states that Thompson, the plaintiff, had previously been injured in a car accident on Jan. 13, 2013. She suffered injuries to her neck, back, shoulders, wrists and legs. That accident allegedly left her more susceptible to injury.
As a result of the canned soup explosion, the lawsuit states that the plaintiff has suffered "new and different injuries" from the Jan. 13, 2013 crash, with added "severe aggravation of pre-existing injuries" that were caused due to the soup incident.
The Oakland County woman is suing for at least $75,000.
Campbell Soup Company released a statement saying they "do not comment on pending litigation."
