ROCHESTER, Mich. (WXYZ) — Researchers at Oakland University are working to create technology that can detect when a video or audio recording is a fake on the internet.

Assistant Professor Khalid Malik has been working with graduate students on first detection audio, and will work on video recordings next year. The goal is to create technology that can spot when a video had been manipulated, and spot it quickly.

The concern with fake video and audio lies within creating falsehoods that could criminally incriminate people in crimes, or even sway political elections.

Buzzfeed created a fake video with former President Barack Obama, but it’s just an animation that is voiced by actor Jordan Peele.

“People are creating the fake videos of politicians you know and this can sway the election results as well, so certainly we got to be very cautious for believing in something, we should verify that this person has said it,” said Malik.

Part of their research is being funded through the national science foundation. Similar research is also taking place at the University of Michigan in Dearborn.
