An off-duty Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a suspected home intruder early Saturday, police said.

It happened at about 1:30 a.m. on the 1400 block of Beatrice in southwest Detroit.

Police said a 26-year-old armed man kicked in the female deputy's door and entered into her home.

The 35-year-old woman retrieved her weapon and fired shots, which struck the suspected intruder in his chest and heart, police added.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said he was wearing a black ski mask and was armed with a pistol at the time of the incident.

In a statement, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department said the deputy, a 15-year veteran, will be assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

The names of the deputy and suspected home intruder were not released at this time.

The Detroit Police Department is still investigating the matter, the statement added.
