There are so many unknowns surrounding the incredibly brutal and horrific mass shooting that took place at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival Sunday night on the Las Vegas strip.
Why did it happen? What was the shooter's motivation? Were there multiple people involved?
Investigators are working to find out the answers, and they've identified the suspected shooter as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Las Vegas. Here's what we know about him so far:
• He's from Mesquite, Nevada, which is about 80 miles away from Las Vegas. He purchased his home there in 2015. On Monday morning, law enforcement officials had a perimeter around his home secured. They had obtained a search warrant for the property.
• Local law enforcement said they know him. He was not known to federal authorities.
• The shooting is not believed to be linked to terrorism, though Paddock's motive is unknown at this time.
• He was on Floor 32 of Mandalay Bay hotel when he shot down into a crowd that was outside. Police said he had several weapons in his hotel room including eight assault rifles and 200 fully loaded magazines. His suite allowed for two different angles for shooting to the outside. Paddock also had cameras down the hall to watch for anyone approaching.
The Route 91 Harvest festival was a three-day event in Las Vegas. Passes were sold out and there were an estimated 22,000 concertgoers in attendance, officials said.
More than 400 people were taken to hospitals in the Vegas area following the shooting that occurred at approximately 10:08 p.m. local time, police said in a release Monday morning. Fifty are dead.
The incident remains an active investigation. The FBI is asking anyone with videos or photos from the shooting call (800) 225-5324.
