DETROIT (WXYZ) — A fire broke out on the top floor of an apartment complex in Midtown Detroit Monday morning.

The Detroit Fire Department believes an illegal grow operation may have been the cause of the fire. Officials said no one was injured in the fire, but three units did sustain substantial damage.

Resident Danielle Marzetti, who lived near where the fire started, said she and her neighbor starting knocking on doors to wake people up and get them out of the apartment complex.

"Luckily, the unit the fire was started, no one lives there, so that was nice," Marzetti said.

Officials said they found more than the legal limit of 12 plants of marijuana in the apartment.

One woman said water damage destroyed all of her belongings.

"I feel like as tenants, we should have known that they were growing weed, even though it is legal, but at that scale, we definitely should have been informed," the woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.

DFD says the fire remains under investigation.
