A relative watching his family's home was found dead after fire
FARMINGTON HILLS - A deadly fire claimed the life of a Farmington Hills man who was house sitting for family members vacationing in Florida.
The Farmington Hill Fire Department was called to the home on W. 10 Mile around 10 Monday night.
Joann Johnson has lived next door to the couple for about 20 years and considers them family. She says in past years she and her husband would watch the house as her neighbors went south.
Johnson doesn't' remember anything out of the ordinary about Monday night and never saw flames or smoke, but says all of a sudden there was a knock at her door, urging her to call for help.
The victim is a man said to be in his late 50s who was watching the house for Johnson's neighbors. Johnson describes him as nice, but says he was dealing with health issues.
The official cause of death has not been determined just yet but the investigation is ongoing.
Johnson says her heart breaks for her neighbors and the victim's family.
"They're like family so it's going to be hard when they come back, to see the emotions from her. "
