President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget could be big trouble for Michigan and the Great Lakes!  The White House is recommending the elimination of what has been bi-partisan Great Lakes funding restoration.  If the administration is successful getting its budget through Congress, crucial programs will be at risk.

Since 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has funded over 2-thousand local and state programs focused on water quality, invasive species, wildlife habitats, and watershed pollution.  The federal money also helps to keep boaters and swimmers safe and our northern borders secure through vital Coast Guard programs.

The five Great Lakes are some of America’s greatest natural resources.  Their beauty and ecosystem impact the 85 million people who live in the region.

Fortunately, Candice Miller, Macomb County’s Public Works Commissioner and Michigan’s newest member of the Great Lakes Commission, went to Washington, D.C. this week to fight for the Great Lakes!

“Don’t mess around with the Great Lakes because its more than a natural resource, it’s 20% of the fresh water drinking supply of the entire planet!”

The President proposes the budget; Congress disposes it.  Tell your Washington representative to protect Great Lakes Restoration funding!  The public can also voice its opinion on March 21st at the International Great Lakes Joint Commission hearing in Detroit.  For more information, go to our wxyz.com web site.

Now is the time to continue our important investment in America’s Great Lakes!
