WXYZ DETROIT — None of us know what kind of surprises are in store for 2021. Will it be more or less challenging than 2020, a COVID-19 pandemic year that blind-sided everyone? But a new year is an opportunity to build on our lessons from the past and look back with approval on our accomplishments.

And that’s what we will highlight this Sunday in our Channel 7 Newsmaker of the Year special when we honor our frontline workers. They were the real Michigan heroes of 2020 as COVID-19 impacted every inch our society. The doctors, nurses, health professionals, first-responders, teachers, delivery people and many others, kept our communities moving forward.

As a nation, state and city, we drew strength from each other. We re-evaluated our priorities and worked hard to put the safety of our families, friends and co-workers at the center of our lives.

On this week’s edition of Spotlight, I'll introduce you to an outstanding panel of dedicated men and women. They come from all walks of life and excel in their various professions. What they have in common is their will to not be defeated by a global virus. You’ll hear their stories Sunday morning at 10 o’clock in our Newsmaker of the Year special. Our entire community can be proud of how they uplifted Southeast Michigan when times seemed the worst. That’s when these essential workers, representative of so many others, were at their best!

As we kickoff 2021, let’s pause for a moment to remember 2020 and congratulate Michigan’s frontline workers for their bravery and ongoing commitment to our community.
