WXYZ DETROIT — The end of August signals two important things. Summer is entering its final weeks and it’s time for back to school preparations. Some students are already back in the classroom, in-person or through virtual learning. Either way, because of COVID-19, this year will present special challenges.

Families, educators and elected leaders have spent the summer making tough decisions on the best way to provide education safely. Soon, Michigan and our entire nation will be put to the test. While experts battle the virus, there’s still a lot we can do as individuals to help make the learning process a success.

Be in touch with teachers to see what kind of resources and supplies students will need. Develop a study schedule and a quiet place where one can concentrate and process information. For those going back to school in-person, visit the building beforehand, if possible. Become familiar with the Coronavirus safety procedures that facility will have in place. Make sure you or your child has a backpack and face mask, if required. Many businesses and local organizations are giving them out for free. Go to wxyz.com to see the list.

For virtual students, ask lots of questions and seek information that will help your family excel at distance learning. There are many helpful hints online. Check out the “Safely Back to School Safely” section of our Channel 7 website which can also be accessed on your favorite mobile device. Our reports provide answers to many of your questions, as well as medical tips from Dr. Partha Nandi, chief health editor for Action News.

Most of all, as a state, let us strive to educate all of our students as safely as possible!
