This historic place in Northern Michigan knows a lot about horsepower and the original 4-wheel drive.  And the beauty of Mackinac Island is that it has remained true to its roots.

So has Detroit, the Motor City.  That image will be reinforced to the world this weekend as motorsports racing comes to another historic island.  The Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix is back and stronger than ever!

That success as a major public attraction is owed in large part to businessman Roger Penske and Grand Prix Chairman Bud Denker.  Both are passionate about this region.  This year, Penske is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his motorsports operation.  It’s a historic milestone for the man affectionately called “The Captain!”  His vision and leadership has been a huge catalyst to Detroit’s rebound.

The Detroit Grand Prix is much more than fast cars racing around a track!  It’s responsible for roughly $50 million pumped directly into our local economy and infrastructure improvements to Belle Isle that total several millions ever year.  These enhancements are by products of Grand Prix corporate support which has been steadily increasing.

How exciting it is to see all of this activity downtown.  Hotels are sold out.  Restaurants – old and new –are extremely busy.   Our hats off to the hundreds of friendly volunteers who serve as Detroit’s official ambassadors.  They make the difference.

All we need now is for the grandstands and chalets to be full of fans for the nationally televised Indy Car races.  You can catch all of the action right here on Channel 7, your official Grand Prix station.  Detroit’s tremendous progress is the talk of the nation.  This weekend, let’s show everyone why we are the comeback city and STILL the Motor Capital of the world!
