On Tuesday, nearly 2-thousand community, business and political leaders  will make their way to Michigan’s historic Mackinac Island.  The annual policy conference, organized by the Detroit Regional Chamber, will wisely concentrate on three pillars: Entrepreneurship, education and investing in the future.   These key areas are critical to Detroit and Michigan’s future!

There are many people in the world who narrowly define our Great Lakes State by Detroit’s past bankruptcy and the Flint water crisis.  But that image of our state doesn’t begin to paint a true and complete picture of all we have to offer.

Thankfully, the Mackinac Conference helps to project Michigan’s international importance without dodging the issues we must address.  From K-12 education, to regional transit, to urban infrastructure, we have to compete and invest in our future.

How to advance creative entrepreneurship will also take center stage.  On hand to help draw attention and excitement to future opportunities will be business icons Dan Gilbert and ABC's Shark Tank star Daymond John.   From West Michigan, CEO Rick DeVos will share how the non-profit community can be a catalyst for change.  And a host of national experts from the automotive, defense, public health and political worlds will help Michigan shape its agenda.  No wise states rest on their laurels!

What happens at the Mackinac Policy conference today is transparent.  We hope you watch, listen and react to what we in the media will broadcast, stream and write from the island.   Although the conversations will take place miles away up north, what is said directly affects our quality of life here at home.   As a community, and as a state, we must act together on the three pillars of entrepreneurship, education and investing in our future with vigor!  Our success depends on it!
