(WXYZ) — ‘Parler’ is the top free app in iPhone’s App Store right now and it’s gaining in popularity.
It has a big following among right-wing conservatives, especially post-Election Day.
Parler dubs itself as the “free speech social network." Conservatives like Sean Hannity and Ted Cruz push for users to leave Twitter and go to Parler instead.
Many right-wing conservatives have joined the “Twexit” movement.
Christina Daves is a social media expert who has been following the trends online.
“It took Twitter two years to get one million followers. Parler now has, I believe, four million followers as of today in in less than two years.”
She says Parler is a place where people can communicate freely without worrying about being flagged or banned.
Many conservatives are pushing for users to leave Twitter behind.
This has come especially after Election Day as Twitter continues to flag President Donald Trump’s tweets about election fraud.
“A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, that is where the conspiracy theories went.’ I think people went to talk about the things they weren’t allowed to talk about on the traditional platforms.”
Parler calls itself the free speech social network and emphasize eliminating bot or spam accounts. But like any social media platform, what you say online can get you in trouble off line.
The New York Times recently reported about a police chief in Arkansas who resigned after posting on Parler, calling for Democrats to be executed.
But not all conversations are about politics.
“Today, there is a lot of things about Veterans Day. I saw something yesterday about certain states that have legalized marijuana, what does that mean?”
Under their guidelines sections, Parler says by law they have to ban comments made on behalf of territorial organizations, anything that promotes criminal activity, fraud and child pornography.
