DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit People Mover has ended service at 6 p.m. due to the extreme cold weather, the company said Wednesday.

Service stopped at 6 p.m., and will resume "when weather conditions improve," according to a press release.

A spokeswoman with the Detroit People Mover said that as the evening approaches and wind chill temperatures further decrease, the system to run the transit will be "operating to its outer limit tolerance." This would result in longer wait times for passengers on open station platforms.

The closure is for the safety of customers.
