Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will be featured on U.S. quarters next year.

The United States Mint selected Pictured Rocks, the historic landscape on the shores of Lake Superior as part of its America the Beautiful Quarters Program -- which launched in 2010 and features designs depicting national parks and sites.

The Michigan coin shows Chapel Rock and the white pine that grows out of it.

The historic Pictured Rocks are getting a lot of attention these days. A travel writer from the New York Times spent 36 hours in the Upper Peninsula and detailed the majestic beauty of the shore.

“The rich palette — red, orange, blue — is the work of minerals like copper and iron seeping into the rocks,” wrote Steve Reddicliffe of Pictured Rocks.  “The colors change throughout the day, and even a cloudy afternoon, when fog floats along the cliff tops, can cast a spell.”

The winning design of Pictured Rocks was unveiled at the American Numismatic Association's World Fair of Money in Denver earlier today.

The 41st America the Beautiful quarter series will be available February 2018. The U.S. Mint began the 56-quarters series in 2010, with an expected end date of 2021.
