PLYMOUTH, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 40-year-old man allegedly assaulted his mother and told police he planned to burn down their home in Plymouth, police said.
The incident happened Saturday around 3 p.m. in the 300 block of Pinewood Circle.
The mother was able to escape the home on her own. When officers arrived, the male suspect was armed with a knife and refused to leave the home. The suspect asked for officers to shoot him.
Police responded by surrounding the home. The negotiation team began talks with the suspect, which is when they learned that the man had intended on burning down the home, police said.
It took several hours for negotiations before the suspect surrendered to police and was taken into custody just before 10 p.m.
Th investigation is ongoing.
