TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Troy Police are investigating a deadly wrong-way driving crash that happened on I-75 early Sunday morning. Two people were killed.
If you ever encounter a wrong-way driver, you'll likely have just moments to react.
Lt. Josh Jones with the Troy Police Department says on the road, there's really only one thing to do: pull over and get as far off the road as possible. Once you are safe, call 911.
Police say the at-fault driver in the Troy crash was heading northbound in the southbound lanes of I-75 for at least two and a half miles. Madison Heights dispatch received a call that a 2011 Chevy Malibu was spotted on the freeway near 12 Mile Road. Madison Heights contacted Troy dispatch to let them know the vehicle was headed their way. Minutes later, Troy police came upon a head-on collision between Maple and 14 Mile Road.
The Malibu collided head on with a 2019 Dodge Challenger, which was driving in the proper direction.
"The drivers of both vehicles were unconscious and needed to be extricated by the fire department," says Lt. Josh Jones of the Troy Police Department.
The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The driver of the Challenger later died at the hospital.
The freeway was closed more than 5 hours for the investigation and cleanup, which Lt. Jones says is much longer than usual for an investigation – a sign of just how serious this crash was.
