STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Sterling Heights police are investigating a murder-suicide involving a married couple which happened on Monday evening.
They have been identified as 67-year-old Elizabeth Mckalpain and 66-year-old Herman Mckalpain. Herman was a former WXYZ photographer and editor who last worked at the station in February 2007.
The couple were lifelong friends who rekindled their friendship and got married just last year. They were friends in the 1970s at Kettering High School and got reacquainted after both had gone through divorces.
Friends and family say they are in shock over what happened.
According to police, they were called to the home in the 14000 block of Shadywood around 5 p.m. Monday.
When they arrived, they found a female dead inside the house. After further investigation, police said they found a male victim with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
