DETROIT (WXYZ) — An off-duty police officer has been hospitalized in stable condition after involved in a shootout on I-75 in Detroit overnight.

On Dec. 24 around 12 a.m., the off-duty officer was traveling south on I-75 near Springwells, when she was allegedly rear-ended by a black Ford F-150, according to the Detroit Police Department.

As the officer tried to get away, the 34-year-old male suspect continued to follow her, ramming her vehicle and pinning the vehicle against the construction barrier wall.

The suspect then got out of his vehicle and at some point exchanged gunfire with the victim, police say. During the shootout, both the victim and suspect were struck.

The off-duty officer sustained a grazed wound to the body. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound.

After the incident, the victim fled to the 7900 block of Olivet where she sought help. She was taken to a local hospital by medics and listed in stable condition. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.

The freeway was closed for an investigation but has since reopened.
