Pontiac man allegedly sprayed wife with alcohol, set her on fire

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — A woman is in critical condition after police say her husband sprayed her with alcohol on her and set her on fire in Pontiac late last week.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 or a burn victim in the ER. They were told that she had been set on fire by her husband inside their home.

Deputies say the husband, 48-year-old James Montgomery, said his wife accidentally poured alcohol on herself and dropped a lit cigarette.

After interviewing the victim, she said that they were arguing and he poured rubbing alcohol all over her and used a lighter to set her on fire. Montgomery was inside the waiting room and was taken into custody without incident.

According to deputies, the victim had over 45 percent of her body covered with second degree burns and she was going to be transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Deputies then interviewed Montgomery who admitting to spraying his wife with brandy liquor and then flicking his lighter setting her on fire after an argument. He is currently at the Oakland County Jail. The woman is in critical but stable condition.
