PORT HURON, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Port Huron family's home has been completely destroyed in a fire.

The Zimmer family, who lives on Union Street, says they escaped from a house fire around 1 a.m. Friday. They say firefighters believe nearby fireworks landing in their trash may have caused the complete destruction of their home.

Sarah Zimmer and her two children, as well as their grandfather, made it out safely because of smoke alarms going off. However, they lost all of their personal belongings.

The family's renter's insurance also expired weeks before the fire.

A friend of the family has set up a GoFundMe page, asking for donations to replace clothing, toys and other possessions. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
