A local United States Postal Service worker admitted to stealing around $2,000 worth of gift cards from the mail since 2015, according to a criminal complaint filed with the U.S. District Court.
The report indicates a customer made the initial call to the Postal Service in December to report four missing Visa gift cards that were sent separately through the mail at the Value Center Marketplace in Clinton Township.
With help from surveillance video, investigators managed to track to use of the gift cards to Jennifer Barbera, a city carrier assistant at the Mount Clemens Post Office.
The criminal complaint states Barbera, when interviewed by authorities, admitted to stealing gift cards valued at around $2,000 from the mail since 2015. The report says she stated she used the cards to buy food for her and her children because the family was struggling financially.
