Public visitation, funeral arrangements announced for Judge Damon J. Keith

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Funeral arrangements have been announced for the service of judge and civil rights icon Damon J. Keith, who died Sunday in his home in Detroit.

According to a close family friend, Keith's family will hold a public visitation on May 11 followed by his funeral on May 13.

The public visitation will be Saturday, May 11 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will follow Monday, May 13 at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, 18700 James Couzens Fwy., at 10 a.m.

Keith served on the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit since 1977. Prior to that post, he served as a federal judge in Michigan's Eastern District, and is known for making dozens of landmark decisions that pushed forward the civil rights movement.

Keith was 96 years old when he died.
