Our life's journey doesn't always run on a smooth path, so it's a good thing Land Rover is going off-roading with autonomous technology.
The auto brand recently revealed that its developing "All Terrain Self-Driving" technology. The future autonomous car, in their eyes, will be able to drive on any surface.
Land Rover says in a statement that researchers are currently working on next generation sensors to ultimately help their vehicles plan out their own path, whether bumpy or smooth.
These futuristic vehicles will have a 360-degree view of the environment with cameras and special sensors to calculate details of every surface-- adjusting speed as needed.
Land Rover says it is also working on an overhead clearance assist feature, which reportedly uses stereo camera technology to check for branches or other obstacles above.
“Our all-terrain autonomy research isn’t just about the car driving itself on a motorway or in extreme off-road situations. It’s about helping both the driven and autonomous car make their way safely through any terrain or driving situation," said Jaguar Land Rover Head of Research Tony Harper in a statement.
Jaguar Land Roverannounced Wednesday the company plans to test out a fleet of more than 100 research vehicles over the next four years with connected and autonomous technologies. One of the focuses will include car-to-car communication, helping vehicles in the same vicinity cooperate with each other.
