Recalled dog food and treats could give humans salmonella

(WXYZ) - The FDA announced that Smokehouse Pet Products is recalling 4-ounce bags of dog treats labeled "Beefy Munchies" because the product could be contaminated with salmonella.

Another Minnesota company, Raws for Paws, is recalling 4,000 pounds of its 5 lb. and 1 lb. chubs of Ground Turkey Pet Food.

That contamination can affect dogs who eat the product and also humans who have handled the product, meaning the dog food could give humans salmonella.

Local doctors tell 7 Action News, salmonella symptoms can be similar for pets and people and start with feeling lethargic.

"Fever, body aches, then progress to nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, diarrhea,”  said Dr. Parang Patel, a family physician with Beaumont.

Dr. Patel said the symptoms usually pass within a few days, but you should see a doctor if the symptoms last more than a few days.

Dr. Patel said the best way to avoid getting ill from from your pets food, is to use proper food safety habits every day.

"Any type of food you touch you should be careful of what that food is, what potential bacteria there is, whether you're getting it ready for pet whether you're getting it ready for your family members,” said Patel.

He said washing your hands every time is a good habit.

"I think it's a good idea to make sure we're washing our hands anytime we handle the food, washing our pets bowls and they things they eat and drink from on a regular basis,” said Patel.

The recalled Smokehouse Pet Products food was distributed in Michigan, Washington, North Carolina and Colorado. No illnesses have been reported.

The product comes in 4-ounce bags with UPC 78565857957 and lot 449294 and with a best used by date of 10/25/19 stamped on the back.
