Beginning on Thursday, jurors at the 36th District Court in downtown Detroit will begin getting paid on the day they served with cash instead of having to wait weeks to get paid.

According to state law, jurors normally are paid $.20 per mile and $30 for their first day and $45 each day after that. The 36th District Court instead pays a flat rate of $10 per day for the mileage plus the daily compensation rate.

“We are very excited to offer this new convenience to our valued jurors. We are always exploring new ways to broaden citizen participation in the jury system," Chief Judge Nancy Blount said in a release.

One of the issues, according to Blount, is that people wanted to serve jury duty but didn't have cash on hand to pay for parking in and around the court. The new plan will hopefully resolve the issue, as the court does not have free parking.
