Christmas gift from Chicago pastor may land former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick back in prison

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A Christmas present from a well known Chicago pastor may land Kwame Kilpatrick back in prison.

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) says Kilpatrick was caught counting $2000 on a Wal-Mart security camera this past December. The wire transfer came from Chicago religious leader, Pastor Corey Brooks.

Brooks says he sent Kilpatrick the money after receiving a letter from the former Detroit mayor pleading for help. In the letter, Kilpatrick says he and his family were broke due to legal fees, according to the MDOC.

Kilpatrick owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution as a result of his perjury conviction.

Authorities are now investigating if failing to report the monetary gift is a violation of Kilpatrick's parole, says MDOC. If the answer is yes, Kwame Kilpatrick may be going back to prison.

Kwame Kilpatrick, his father Bernard and friend Bobby Ferguson are currently on trial in federal court for allegedly running a criminal enterprise out of the city of Detroit.
